Services Available

We have a wide range of facilities available including ECG & Radiology. Clinical Pathology is now routine. Results are available quickly from our associated Laboratory CVDL.

Many are more rapidly available as new Haematology and Biochemistry equipment is installed in the Hospital.

Gaseous anaesthetic equipment is used for most operations because of its safety and rapid quiet recoveries.

Hospitalization: While the majority of patients are treated as outpatients the few that require hospitalization are accommodated in modern easy cleaned stainless steel accommodation.

Dentistry: Dental health is vital for the wellbeing of cats and dogs. Periodontal disease is common, usually being caused by the feeding of deficient diets. We are equipped to remove the tartar and advise on feeding which will reduce the future buildup. Without treatment it leads to bad breath (halitosis), sore gums, difficulty eating and infections that can invade the bloodstream and even cause the heart disease endocarditis.

Other dental problems include extra and overcrowded teeth, hereditary deformities, fractured teeth and root abscesses.

Heartworm Disease, though uncommon in Melbourne, is a serious and often ultimately fatal parasitic infestation in the blood vessels of the heart and lungs. It is easily prevented with modern medicine and early treatment, though moderately expensive, is usually effective. A long convalescence period with some permanent scarring of the lungs is common. This is one disease where prevention is far better than cure.

Flea Control: Fleas cause more discomfort and disease than any other cause. Resistance to insecticides are common so careful advice is important both to get effective control and prevent wasting time and money.

Surgery: The dedicated Operating Theatre allows surgery to be performed under minimal risk. Monitoring equipment includes the Apalert Respiration Monitor, Anaesthetic gas oxygen monitor and Electrocardiogram. Orthopaedic and general surgery is performed under conditions that optimize conditions for a successful result.

Microchip Identification is the latest and most secure form of pet identification which uses a silicon chip device the size of a grain of rice. When read it emits a unique number which allows the owner to be identified. The system relies on a readily available database, which must be available 24 hours a day. We use the Central Animal Records whose data is also stored on the Australian Animal Register.

Allergies: are common in dogs and cats. While the most common allergen is the saliva of fleas, Food, plant, moulds, dust and pollen allergens are common. Cats and dogs may even be allergic to humans (actually the skin flakes from our skin). Disease may show up as itching, sore ears, asthma, diarrhoea, skin infections and many other symptoms. Unless relieved allergies can make life pretty miserable. Appropriate treatment may involve removing the allergen (always best), desensitisation (works sometimes), shampoos, food additives, antihistamines, corticosteroids and other immunosuppressive drugs.
